Man Dies After 100-Foot Fall at Grand Canyon National Park

The 65-year-old man slipped and fell near Guano Point on the South Rim; recovery teams assisted by multiple agencies.

PHOENIX — A 65-year-old man died Thursday after falling more than 100 feet into the Grand Canyon near Guano Point, according to the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO).

Deputies were called around 2 p.m. to assist the Hualapai Nation with a technical recovery effort. The man reportedly slipped and fell from the edge of the canyon, located near the popular West Skywalk area on the South Rim.

Search and rescue crews descended into the canyon to recover the man’s body, which was later turned over to the Mohave County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs Police, Hualapai Nation Fire Department, and Grand Canyon West security assisted in the recovery operation.

The man’s identity has not been released.

This marks the latest in a series of fatal falls at Grand Canyon viewpoints this year, prompting officials to continue reminding visitors to stay behind railings and maintain safe distances from canyon edges when taking photos or sightseeing.
