Man Critically Injured in Early-Morning Hatchet Attack in Avondale; Suspect in Custody

Police say a welfare check led to the discovery of a severely injured man and the arrest of 33-year-old Oscar Funes.

An early-morning welfare check in Avondale took a violent turn over the weekend when police discovered a man suffering from severe head injuries caused by a hatchet attack, according to the Avondale Police Department.

Officers responded to the area of Pacific Drive and First Street shortly before 6 a.m. Saturday. When they arrived, they found a man with significant injuries to his head. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Authorities arrested the suspect, identified as 33-year-old Oscar Funes, at the scene. Police have not yet released details about what led to the attack or the relationship between the suspect and the victim.

Funes was booked into the Maricopa County Jail, and the investigation remains ongoing. The victim’s name has not been made public.
