PHOENIX — A Phoenix man was sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 91.5 years after being convicted of sexually abusing three children, Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell announced Friday.
Matthew Segundo, 40, was found guilty on nine counts, including five counts of molestation of a minor, a Class 2 felony.
“If he gets out, he is at risk to do this to another child or to somebody else, and I just never want that,” one of the victims said during sentencing, according to a press release.
Authorities were first alerted in 2022 when one of the victims disclosed the abuse to a school resource officer. Investigators later interviewed a younger sibling who corroborated the allegations and described further repeated abuse. Both children were living with Segundo at the time.
During forensic interviews, another victim reported that Segundo had also abused a third child, who no longer lived with him.
“This predator’s selfish actions have had a lasting impact on the lives of these children,” Mitchell said. “I am in awe of these children who were willing to tell what had happened to them. Courageous victims help us put abusers in prison where they belong.”
Segundo’s sentencing includes an order of confinement, ensuring he will not be eligible for release.
Phoenix police have increased support for victims of domestic and sexual violence in recent years, partnering with organizations such as the National Domestic Violence Hotline and the Arizona Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence.
