PHOENIX – After a 26-year investigation, Phoenix authorities announced the arrest of 58-year-old Javier Lorenzano-Nunez for the 1998 murder of 28-year-old Sarah Carr. Carr was found shot on July 9, 1998, in a home near 14th Street and McDowell Road and later succumbed to her injuries.
The case remained unsolved from 1998 to 2016, with detectives initially having only a nickname for the suspect. However, advancements in technology helped identify Lorenzano-Nunez, who had since lived in California and most recently in Mexico.
Working closely with the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, detectives secured an arrest warrant, and the U.S. Justice Department coordinated with Mexican authorities to apprehend Lorenzano-Nunez. The suspect was extradited to Phoenix on Wednesday and is currently held on a $3.5 million bond, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.
In a Phoenix police YouTube video, Carr’s son, Garrett Miller, shared that his mother’s case inspired him to pursue a career in law enforcement, where he now serves as a police officer in Austin, Texas.
