A Scottsdale neighborhood was disrupted Saturday when a man allegedly forced his way into a woman’s home, assaulted her and then barricaded himself inside, prompting a large emergency response that shut down nearby streets for hours.
Scottsdale police said the incident began just after 11 a.m. near Scottsdale and McDowell roads, when a woman called for help after escaping her home. She told authorities the man — identified as 54-year-old Andrew Shadid — had poured gasoline inside the house and threatened to ignite it if officers arrived.
The woman, who had reportedly been physically assaulted before fleeing, was not inside when officers and tactical units reached the scene. According to police spokesperson Aaron Bolin, negotiators attempted to communicate with Shadid for more than an hour, but he never responded and indicated he was armed.
The standoff lasted roughly four hours before Scottsdale SWAT officers entered the home and took Shadid into custody. He was booked on multiple domestic-violence-related charges, including aggravated assault, resisting arrest, violating a protective order and aggravated domestic violence. Shadid was barred from being at the residence under an existing court order.
The incident led police to block roads and evacuate nearby homes as a precaution while they secured the area. Officers continued clearing the residence and stabilizing the neighborhood into the afternoon.
