Man Arrested After Fatally Shooting Stepfather During Argument in West Phoenix, Police Say

Officers say 31-year-old Brandon Alvarez called 911 after the shooting, telling dispatchers he had shot his stepfather following a family dispute.

A family argument in west Phoenix ended in tragedy Sunday night when a man allegedly shot and killed his stepfather, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Officers responded around 7:35 p.m. to a home near 39th and Maryland avenues after receiving reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they detained 31-year-old Brandon Alvarez, who had called 911 to report that he had shot his stepfather, police said.

Inside the backyard, officers found 57-year-old Jaunarius Moreno suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics with the Phoenix Fire Department pronounced him dead at the scene.

Investigators said preliminary evidence indicates the shooting stemmed from a verbal argument between Alvarez and Moreno that escalated into violence.

Alvarez was arrested and booked on second-degree murder charges. The investigation remains ongoing.
