A 23-year-old man was arrested Thursday after police said he fatally shot his cousin inside a Peoria home before leaving the scene armed during what authorities described as an apparent crisis.
According to the Peoria Police Department, officers responded around 9:30 a.m. to a residence near Beardsley Road and 83rd Avenue following reports of a shooting.
When officers arrived, investigators said the suspect, identified as Nickolas Benson, had already left the home while armed with a firearm.
Police later took Benson into custody without incident.
Inside the residence, officers found 22-year-old Justice Parton dead from an apparent gunshot wound. Authorities later confirmed Benson and Parton were cousins.
Investigators said two other people were inside the home at the time of the shooting but were not injured.
No additional details about the circumstances leading up to the shooting have been released as the investigation remains ongoing in Peoria.
