Authorities are investigating a Tuesday morning shooting in southern Arizona that left one person critically injured and reportedly involved U.S. Border Patrol agents.
The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. near milepost 15 on West Arivaca Road, an area roughly 10 miles from the U.S.–Mexico border, according to the Santa Rita Fire District. Emergency crews from SRFD and American Medical Response found one person critically wounded and another detained when they arrived on scene.
The injured individual was airlifted to a regional trauma center for treatment, officials said. No officers were reported hurt.
Local station KVOA confirmed that the shooting involved a Border Patrol officer. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI are assisting in the investigation. In a brief statement, the FBI said it is “investigating an alleged assault on a federal officer” near Arivaca.
The region, situated between Interstate 19 and the rural community of Arivaca, is frequently patrolled by federal agents due to its proximity to known smuggling and migration routes along the southern border.
