2016-17 Chamber
Matthew Kasper, conductor Stravinsky: Danses concertantes Chamber Music is back by popular demand with a four concert series featuring the musicians of The Phoenix Symphony. Opening the series is a concert led by Assistant Conductor Matthew Kasper, beginning with Stravinsky’s neoclassical gem, Danses concertantes, originally conceived as a ballet. The performances also features Vivaldi’s dazzling and virtuosic Piccolo Concerto and concludes with Haydn’s final “London” symphony, with its exuberant finale reminiscent of folk songs.

2016-17 Mesa For one night only, veteran star of the Broadway stage Bernadette Peters joins forces with The Phoenix Symphony to perform favorites from Broadway shows and The Great American Songbook. Ms. Peters is perhaps best known for her definitive and iconic Broadway performances in Sunday in the Park with George, Song and Dance, Into the Woods and Annie Get Your Gun. She is also widely acknowledged as the leading interpreter of the works of Stephen Sondheim. She has received countless accolades throughout her distinctive career, ranging from her Tony Awards to a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. 2016-17 Classics Tito Muñoz, conductor Adam Schoenberg: Canto Maestro Tito Muñoz returns for a powerful performance of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 7, a patriotic hymn to his hometown of Leningrad and a rallying cry to the foes of fascism. This large orchestral work masterfully fuses Shostakovich’s emotional themes and motifs into “music written with the heart’s blood.” Valley favorite Concertmaster Steven Moeckel joins this program with a breathless performance of Samuel Barber’s rhapsodic Violin Concerto. To open, Maestro Muñoz once again features the music of young American composer Adam Schoenberg for the third straight season, this time presenting Schoenberg’s idyllic and lyrical Canto inspired by the birth of his son.

2016-17 Legends Come rock out to one of the top-selling bands of all time as The Phoenix Symphony presents The Music of Journey. Valley favorite, Juan Del Castillo, returns to present rock’s most iconic music like you have never heard it before, live with The Phoenix Symphony. 2016-17 Events Join us on Monday, November 7 for Symphony Score, a one-of-a-kind golf fundraiser benefitting The Phoenix Symphony. The format of the tournament is unique as golfers will compete against the Symphony’s own musicians for a host of musically themed prizes. The event features live music on the course, followed by cocktails, lunch and the big reveal—will the musicians or the patrons take home the first Symphony Score Cup?

2016-17 Events Hidden in the center of Paradise Valley, surrounded by lush desert trees, is a contemporary wonder of a home where we will kick off the parties of note season. 2016-17 Classics Tito Muñoz, conductor Beethoven: Egmont Overture*+ Mark Kosower, Principal Cello of the world-renowned Cleveland Orchestra, makes his Phoenix Symphony debut and joins Tito Muñoz for Antonín Dvorák’s rich and soulful Cello Concerto – “the most beautiful ever written for the instrument.” The program opens with John Corigliano’s two-time Grammy Award-winning Symphony No. 1, an unforgettable work that features an epic quilt-like weaving of themes memorializing the feelings of loss, anger and frustration. *Coffee Classics performances feature one hour of select pieces and/or movements from the weekend Classics program. +Egmont Overture performed only at 11am Coffee Classics concert.

2016-17 Specials Tito Muñoz, conductor Handel’s massive oratorio makes a profound musical statement of the Christian faith, celebrating the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The acclaimed and popular “Hallelujah” chorus highlights this spiritual concert. 2016-17 Specials Back by popular demand, Cirque de la Symphonie returns to The Phoenix Symphony with an all new holiday show. This year, the popular Cirque troupe brings their gravity-defying acts to the iconic Orpheum Theatre with a special dose of holiday cheer. Experience vocalist Tony Vincent and The Phoenix Symphony, along with a full rock band for this exhilarating musical odyssey that showcases the extraordinary range of Bowie’s musical career. 2016-17 Classics Tito Muñoz, conductor Rossini: Selections from The Barber of Seville Tito Muñoz leads this Spanish-inspired program as Grammy Award-winner and opera sensation Isabel Leonard makes her Phoenix Symphony debut. Performing selections from Bizet’s famous opera, Carmen, Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, Enriqué Granados’ amorous Spanish poems, Canciónes amatoria, as well as traditional Spanish songs, Siete canciones populares españolas (Seven Spanish Folksongs) by Manuel de Falla, this delightful and romantic program is destined to leave audiences “enamorado”… in love.

See rising star pianists from around the world as they compete to win $15,000, a guest artist contract with The Phoenix Symphony, and performance opportunities at the Bösendorfer National Concert Series. Experience three piano concertos during this unique concert and join in the excitement and anticipation as the next Bösendorfer International Piano Competition winner is chosen live before the audience.
