Macy’s to Close Superstition Springs Location Amid Nationwide Downsizing

Mesa Store Among 66 Locations Set to Close in Early 2025

PHOENIX — Macy’s Inc., the iconic department store chain, has announced plans to close its Superstition Springs Center location in Mesa as part of a broader strategy to shutter 66 stores across the country.

The closure of the Mesa store, located at 6535 E Southern Ave., is expected during the first quarter of 2025. While an exact date has not been specified, Macy’s said clearance sales at the location will begin in January and run for eight to 12 weeks.

Macy’s Downsizing Efforts

The move is part of Macy’s ongoing plan to optimize its retail footprint, focusing on e-commerce and more profitable store locations. The retailer, listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol M, continues to adjust to shifts in consumer shopping habits.

Impact on Superstition Springs Center

Superstition Springs Center, where Macy’s has served as an anchor tenant, is operated by The Macerich Co. (NYSE: MAC). Macerich owns several high-profile retail properties in the Phoenix area, including Scottsdale Fashion Square, Kierland Commons, and Arrowhead Towne Center.

In 2024, Macerich sold its remaining ownership stake in Biltmore Fashion Park to Phoenix-based Red Development, signaling continued shifts in its Valley portfolio.

What’s Next

With Macy’s closure, the future of the Superstition Springs Center location remains uncertain. Clearance sales are set to start this month, offering shoppers a chance to take advantage of significant discounts before the store closes its doors for good.

This closure reflects broader challenges in the retail industry as stores adapt to changing consumer preferences and economic pressures.
