Many rideshare drivers are finding themselves without income while community groups are finding themselves without supplies, but a new Lyft initiative is aiming to fill both of those gaps.

On Wednesday, Lyft unveiled their Essential Deliveries program “where government agencies, local non-profits, businesses and healthcare organizations can request on-demand delivery of meals, groceries, life-sustaining medical supplies, hygiene products and home necessities — all delivered by Lyft drivers.”

The deliveries are contact-free to help reduce the spread of coronavirus, and drivers are paid similarly to Standard rides, Lyft said on its website.

Currently, the program includes partnerships like Dole Packaged Foods deliveries to senior facilities, and Army of Angels, which is supplying school lunches to low-income families.

Phoenix is among 11 cities where the Essential Deliveries service is currently being offered. Lyft is hoping to expand to other markets in the coming weeks.

Lyft is also still offering passenger rides if you need to make an essential trip as a caretaker, get essential goods, or visit the doctor or pharmacy, etc.

Their Driver Community Task Force also allows drivers to sign up and help the community by helping essential employees, helping families get to food banks, spreading the word about service opportunities and more.
