PEORIA — The head wrestling coach at Liberty High School has been placed on administrative leave as new allegations of sexualized hazing prompt reopened investigations by both the Peoria Unified School District and Peoria police.
Coach Eric Brenton, also a history teacher, was placed on paid leave this week after student-athletes came forward with additional claims. A letter sent to wrestling families by Principal Sawn Duguid said the district decided to revisit a prior investigation due to the new information.
Officials urged anyone with information to contact either the school district’s Human Resources Department or Peoria police.
Previous investigation
In 2024, both the district and police investigated reports of hazing within the wrestling program, including incidents during practice and on an out-of-town trip. Videos reviewed by police allegedly showed students being restrained, exposed, or subjected to simulated sexual acts.
That investigation was eventually closed, with police citing an inability to identify victims and a lack of grounds for prosecution. The district also conducted an internal review, which led to Brenton being suspended from coaching for one year.
Current oversight
District officials said steps have since been taken to improve oversight of the wrestling program, including installing more cameras, increasing supervision, and involving the athletic director more closely.
For now, the wrestling program will continue under interim supervision by Noah Gregorovic.
