K9 Max Recovers After Fentanyl Exposure at Maricopa County Jail

Drug-sniffing dog given Narcan and rushed to animal hospital following medical emergency

PHOENIX — A drug-detection dog named Max is recovering after being exposed to fentanyl while assisting officers at a Valley jail earlier this week, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO).

The incident occurred Wednesday when Max alerted prison officers to the presence of fentanyl on an inmate. Moments later, he began showing signs of medical distress.

His handler and detention staff acted quickly, transporting Max to a nearby animal hospital. There, he was administered Narcan, a life-saving opioid overdose reversal drug, and monitored closely.

MCSO confirmed that Max made a full recovery and is already showing signs he’s ready to get back to work.

“His strength — and his handler’s quick response — are nothing short of heroic,” MCSO said in a post shared to social media.
