Is It Safe To Use The Wi-Fi At Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport?

In a study released this week, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport was named one of the 10 most dangerous areas to connect to public Wi-Fi. Because connection to the internet is a necessity for most people today, it is important to be informed before you connect.

A technical security company based in Tel-Aviv conducted a study in which the 45 busiest American airports were rated for their Wi-Fi security. In the study, Israeli company Coronet analyzed 250,000 devices within .6 miles of the airports, including the airport Wi-Fi provider and providers of close businesses and homes.

To assess the vulnerability of the airports’ Wi-Fi connection, Coronet gave each airport a vulnerability score based on the security levels of the Wi-Fi, a score of 0 having no threat and a score of 10 being the most dangerous.

Wondering how Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport did? With a score of 6.5/10, the airport ranked in the 10 Most Vulnerable Airports. So, take extra precautions if you ever find yourself passing through.

The study revealed that users need to be careful when using airport Wi-Fi, especially in those deemed “Most Vulnerable.” Dror Liwer, Coronet’s founder, urges travelers to “be aware of the risks and take the appropriate steps to minimize the danger.”

Liwer’s answer to the problem? He suggests that travelers use Coronet’s app, which protects devices from malicious activity. If you don’t want to use the Coronet app, but still want to be vigilant, be careful when connecting the internet in any public place. If you’re at the airport, make sure you’re only connecting to official airport wireless. Also, be sure the websites you visit are HTTPS-encrypted and use a VPN.
