TUCSON, Ariz. — Security personnel at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base shot and killed a civilian early Friday after the individual allegedly attempted to breach the installation’s main gate, military officials announced.
The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. when the driver refused to stop at the Craycroft Road entrance and crashed into a deployed vehicle barrier, according to a statement from the 355th Wing. After the impact, the suspect reportedly reversed the vehicle, prompting members of the 355th Security Forces Squadron to open fire.
The identity of the deceased has not been released. No injuries were reported among base personnel.
“We certainly regret the loss of life that occurred early this morning,” said Col. Jose Cabrera, 355th Wing commander. “Our defenders acted in accordance with their training and policies to secure the base and protect our airmen.”
An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, located in Tucson, is home to the 355th Wing, which oversees A-10C Thunderbolt II pilot training and deployment operations.
