Intruder Arrested After Alleged Attack Leaves Six Seniors Injured at Tempe Community Center

Police say a man was detained by staff after reportedly assaulting several seniors at the Escalante Multi-Generational Center on Wednesday morning.

A quiet Wednesday morning at a Tempe community hub turned violent when an intruder allegedly attacked multiple seniors, injuring six people before being subdued by security personnel.

Tempe police identified the suspect as Derek Kirven, who reportedly entered the Escalante Multi-Generational Center around 11:30 a.m. despite not being a member. According to authorities, Kirven had been confronted twice about his presence in the facility before the situation escalated into violence.

Witnesses said the man began assaulting several people inside the center, prompting a swift response from security staff, who detained him until police arrived. Officers then took Kirven into custody without further incident.

Police confirmed that six seniors were hurt during the assault. At least one victim was hospitalized, though the extent of their injuries has not yet been disclosed.

Kirven was later booked into jail on multiple charges, including felony aggravated assault and criminal damage, according to the Tempe Police Department. The motive behind the attack remains unclear as investigators continue to piece together the events leading up to the assault.

The Escalante Multi-Generational Center, located near East Orange Street, offers recreational programs and resources for residents of all ages. The city has not yet commented on any changes to security protocols following the incident.

Authorities urge anyone with additional information about the case to contact Tempe police as the investigation continues.
