Instagram Adds Profile Status Indicator

It’s not safe to ignore your followers on Instagram anymore. The popular social media site announced in a blog post that they will now be featuring user statuses.

A green dot next to your profile picture will indicate that you are active on the app. If you’re browsing pictures, your followers will see the dot on their screen, too. It will be visible on the messaging platform within Instagram as well as on your friends list when you share posts.

Don’t want users who you don’t follow to know whether you’re active? No worries, Instagram has assured its users that it will only be visible to your followers and those you have chatted with via direct message.

If you don’t want the new feature at all, you can deactivate it in the “Activity Status” section of the app’s Settings menu.

The new feature was created to promote more conversation between active users. Before the update, user status was indicated by a line of information that stated how long ago they were on the app with gray text, an example being “Active 15m ago.”

The green dot is a more efficient way to display this information and a move toward more real-time social media activity.
