Apple is once again in hot water. This time due to user data and IPhone apps.
This comes as a shock to many, as Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, has declared privacy to be a human right and coined the phrase: “what happens on your IPhone, stays on your IPhone.”
Despite this, there are dozens of trackers on your IPhone, and they collect data day and night. A new app called “Disconnect” found 5,400 of these trackers on one phone, and they gathered more than 1.5 gigabytes of data in one week.
Much of the tracking being done isn’t disclosed when you download the app nor in the user agreements. They also couldn’t identify where the information was going, which would open users up to identity theft or data corruption.
While this sounds scary, the majority of the data blocked by the “Disconnect” app is ad tracking. Some of it tracks how you interact with apps. This allows developers to improve their products.
It’s likely that Apple will have to do some damage control to address its less than transparent privacy pledge. In the meantime, it is important for users to educate themselves on how they can help improve their online security.
