On July 6, 2024, at approximately 11:48 AM, a hot air balloon crash at the Ramada Inn Hotel in Williams, Arizona, resulted in injuries to three individuals and significant property damage. The incident occurred during the setup of the balloon’s operations when a sudden thermal gust of air escalated wind speeds from an initial 7-8 miles per hour to 40-50 miles per hour. This abrupt change caused the balloon to detach from its anchor point and collide with nearby structures and vehicles.
Dwayne Osborne, the pilot of the balloon, reported that the wind gust was unexpected and beyond the normal operational limits. The crash injured two individuals involved in the balloon setup and an adult who was nearby. An 8-year-old female suffered a broken thumb and rope burns, while a 15-year-old male sustained back and neck injuries. An adult female also sustained abrasions. All three were transported to Flagstaff Medical Center for treatment.
The collision resulted in damage to two parked vehicles and various vendor items, including Easy-Up Canopies and Fold-Up Tables. Additionally, a light pole at the Ramada Inn was downed. Upon arrival, emergency responders from the Williams Police Department and Williams Fire Department attended to the injured and secured the area. The fire department also neutralized three propane tanks found at the crash site to ensure safety.
Further inspection revealed damage to the southwest corner of a nearby building at 233 E Rodeo Rd, which included electrical components. The Williams Police Department documented the incident, collected evidence, and notified relevant property owners. Accident Exchange Cards were provided to all involved parties, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was informed for further investigation.
