Hoover Dam America250 Celebration

Hoover Dam Unveils Massive Patriotic Display Ahead of America250 Celebration

Hoover Dam is now illuminated with a large-scale patriotic display as Arizona and Nevada leaders officially launched the road to America250 during Memorial Day weekend.

The temporary installation features red, white, and blue lighting across Hoover Dam along with a massive American flag suspended over the landmark. Organizers say the project is the largest patriotic display ever installed at Hoover Dam.

The unveiling ceremony included Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo, Clark County Commissioner Jim Gibson, Bureau of Reclamation Acting Regional Director Genevieve Johnson, and Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority President and CEO Steve Hill.

The event also marked the unofficial beginning of the summer travel season as millions of Americans prepare for road trips and vacations across the Southwest. The Hoover Dam activation ties into America250 initiatives encouraging travelers to visit historic landmarks and iconic American destinations ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration in 2026.

According to organizers, the Hoover Dam light display will operate nightly through July 4, weather permitting, creating a major summer tourism attraction for visitors traveling between Arizona and Nevada.

Hoover Dam Remains One of America’s Most Recognizable Landmarks

Hoover Dam continues to serve as one of the Southwest’s most famous engineering achievements and tourist attractions. Construction began in 1931 during the Great Depression and was completed in 1936. More than 21,000 workers contributed to the project over five years.

Located on the Arizona-Nevada border, Hoover Dam attracts millions of visitors each year and remains a popular stop for travelers visiting Las Vegas, Lake Mead, and Northern Arizona.

During the ceremony, Governor Katie Hobbs highlighted Hoover Dam’s historical significance and its connection to American resilience and innovation.

“Americans came together to build something the world had never seen,” Hobbs said while discussing the landmark’s impact on the region and the country.

Massive Hoover Dam Lighting Installation By the Numbers

Organizers said the patriotic display required more than 550 LED lights and over 126,000 feet of wire. The entire lighting system is powered using Hoover Dam hydroelectricity.

The American flag used in the installation measures 300 feet by 150 feet and weighs approximately 2,000 pounds.

More than 80 people worked on the Hoover Dam installation project, with crews completing much of the setup overnight to minimize impacts on tourists and visitors.

Tourism officials expect the patriotic display and America250 events to help drive additional summer travel to Hoover Dam and the surrounding Southwest tourism corridor throughout June and July.
