Honeywell In Glendale To Help Manufacture Parts For NASA

The Glendale facility of technology and manufacturing company, Honeywell will help produce parts for a NASA spacecraft that will send humans to the moon for the first time in more than 50 years.

Honeywell was awarded a contract by Lockheed Martin for production of NASA’s Orion spacecraft fleet for the upcoming Artemis missions, the company announced in a press release.

Honeywell facilities in Clearwater, Florida, and Puerto Rico will produce parts for the spacecraft as well.

“This is a major win for our team in Clearwater, our space business and for Honeywell as a whole,” Mike Elias, vice president of space for Honeywell Aerospace, said in the release. “Honeywell was present on all of NASA’s previous crewed space missions, including those that brought humans to the moon for the first time, and we’re proud to be working with Lockheed Martin to help shape the future of human space exploration.”

Orion, a deep space command module, will provide life support systems to early moon missions and be a docking station to keep astronauts safe in case of an emergency.

Honeywell will help produce guidance and navigation systems, command data handling, displays and controls, and core flight software for the spacecraft.

NASA intends to send the first woman and next man to the moon as part of the Artemis mission by 2024.

The ultimate goal of the missions is to prepare astronauts for the possibility of being sent to Mars, according to NASA’s website.
