PHOENIX — A Hillside resident is facing multiple charges after allegedly sparking a wildfire in Yavapai County by driving his pickup truck on a bare metal rim for nearly three miles, according to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO).
Deputies arrested the man on Friday on suspicion of DUI, reckless burning, and endangerment. The incident reportedly began after the driver crashed into an embankment, blowing out a tire, but chose to continue driving toward his home.
As he traveled along Bagdad Road near the communities of Hillside and Yava, the grinding of the exposed rim against the pavement created sparks, igniting several fires along the roadside.
Emergency crews responded quickly to contain the spreading wildfire, preventing it from threatening nearby homes and structures.
The YCSO reminded motorists to pull over immediately if their vehicles become damaged or unsafe to drive. Drivers were also urged to routinely inspect their cars for debris or mechanical issues that could inadvertently start fires, especially in dry, fire-prone areas.
