Hiker Dies After Being Airlifted from Camelback Mountain Following Medical Emergency

Crews Performed Resuscitation Before Airlifting the Unconscious Man in Critical Condition

PHOENIX — A hiker who suffered a serious medical emergency on Camelback Mountain Monday has died, authorities confirmed Tuesday.

Rescue crews from Phoenix and Tempe were dispatched to the Echo Canyon Trailhead around 9:30 a.m. Monday, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

When first responders reached the hiker near the summit, he was unconscious and not breathing.

“Firefighters immediately began advanced resuscitation efforts,” said Capt. Todd Keller in a statement.

The man was airlifted off the mountain by a Phoenix Police Department helicopter and taken to a hospital in extremely critical condition.

The hiker passed away the following day. No further details have been released.
