Higher License Fees Could Improve Roads

New measures in both the Arizona House and Senate hope to improve roadways throughout the state. The proposal calls for higher vehicle license fees in exchange for necessary overhauls.

Senator Bob Worsley, a co-author of the Senate bill, tried a similar tactic last year but didn’t meet the approval of the Senate President, Steve Yarbrough.

Representative Noel Campbell has created an identical proposal for the House. Although previous measures have not succeeded, this year each proposal has four sponsors, which may result in change.

In Arizona, the Highway User Revenue Fund (HURF) collects taxes on gasoline and fees on vehicle registration and licenses. These monies are designated for highway construction and roadway improvements.

Currently, HURF is drained of $95 million annually for other projects and not spent on smoother, safer roads. Many lawmakers have worked to change this situation for years.
