In a heart-pounding high-speed pursuit on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, a coordinated effort by the Sheriff’s Office, Tombstone Marshal’s Office, and the Arizona Department of Public Safety led to the arrest of Efren David Cosme Molohua, 21, from Mesa. The suspect, involved in human smuggling, drove at speeds up to 120 miles per hour on Highway 80, endangering numerous lives before being apprehended.
High-Speed Chase and Apprehension
The chase began at approximately 9:13 pm when Sheriff’s Deputies attempted to stop a white Chevrolet Camaro near milepost 312 on Highway 80. The driver, later identified as Molohua, refused to yield and accelerated to speeds of up to 120 miles per hour. The pursuit involved dangerous maneuvers, with Molohua passing vehicles and forcing them off the roadway.
Deputies, alongside the Tombstone Marshal’s Office, pursued the vehicle as it continued its erratic journey. Upon reaching milepost 305, a male passenger wearing camouflage clothing exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Undeterred, Molohua continued driving at high speeds, intermittently turning the vehicle’s lights off and on to evade capture.
Strategic Intervention and Arrest
As Molohua approached milepost 302 on Highway 80, Department of Public Safety Troopers deployed tire deflation devices, successfully striking three of the vehicle’s tires. The Camaro eventually came to a stop off the roadway at milepost 301, where law enforcement executed a high-risk traffic stop.
Molohua, the sole occupant remaining in the vehicle, was apprehended without further incident. He was arrested and booked into the Cochise County Jail on charges of Human Smuggling, Unlawful Flight, and Reckless Driving. He is currently held on a $50,000 bond.
