As Phoenix residents prepare to ring in 2026, city officials are reminding the public that Thursday, January 1, 2026, will be an official holiday — and several municipal services will be affected.
Solid Waste and Recycling:
There will be no trash or recycling pickup on New Year’s Day. Instead, collection days will shift by one day, starting with Thursday’s routes on Friday, January 2, and Friday’s routes on Saturday, January 3. Both the 27th Avenue and North Gateway transfer stations will also be closed on the holiday.
City Services and Libraries:
The Public Works Customer Contact Center will be closed Thursday but will reopen at 7 a.m. Friday. Residents can still submit service requests anytime through the myPHX311 portal. All Phoenix Public Library branches will also be closed for the day, though book drops and online resources remain available 24/7.
Parks and Recreation:
City recreation centers will close early on New Year’s Eve (by 5 p.m. on Dec. 31) and remain closed on Jan. 1. Parks and hiking trails, however, will stay open during regular hours. Visitors are encouraged to review the city’s “Take a Hike. Do it Right.” safety guidelines before hitting the trails.
Public Transit:
Bus and light rail services will operate on a Sunday schedule on New Year’s Day, with no Express or RAPID routes. Transit centers at Ed Pastor, Sunnyslope, and Central Station will be closed, and customer service will not be available. Dial-a-Ride will still operate by reservation from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport:
Travelers flying through Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport should plan ahead by reserving parking at skyharbor.com/parkphx and arriving early — at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours for international ones. Security checkpoint times, parking availability, and flight updates can be viewed on the airport’s website or in-terminal displays.
For those using the PHX Reserve program, passengers can book a TSA screening appointment online and skip longer security lines by showing up at their scheduled time.
As the city celebrates the start of the new year, officials urge residents to plan ahead for closures and travel safelythroughout the holiday weekend.
