Have Your Say: Arizona’s Electric Vehicle Charging Network Expansion

ADOT Seeks Public Input on New Fast-Charging Stations Across the State

As Arizona continues to push forward in its commitment to sustainable transportation, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is inviting public participation in shaping the next phase of the state’s Electric Vehicle (EV) Infrastructure Deployment Plan. The plan, which aims to enhance the network of fast-charging stations, is set to expand to new state highway segments, and ADOT is seeking feedback through a virtual meeting and various other channels.

Public Involvement in EV Infrastructure

During this session, ADOT project staff will provide detailed information about the proposed locations for new EV charging stations and answer any questions from the public. Interested individuals can register for the meeting and obtain more information by visiting azdot.gov/EVPlan.

The proposed update includes nine additional state highway segments that will complement the first phase of the plan, which already covers all interstate highways as well as significant portions of U.S. Highway 89, U.S. 93, and State Routes 64, 87, 95, and 347. The new segments are set to enhance connectivity and ensure that electric vehicle drivers have reliable access to fast-charging stations across the state.

Proposed Additional Segments

The newly proposed segments for fast-charging stations include:

  • State Route 89: From Bisbee to Douglas
  • State Route 90: From Interstate 10 to Bisbee
  • U.S. 60: From Wickenburg to Phoenix
  • U.S. 60: From Phoenix to Globe
  • U.S. 60: From Show Low to New Mexico
  • U.S. 93: From Wickenburg to I-40
  • U.S. 95: From Quartzsite to San Luis
  • U.S. 160: From U.S. 89 to Four Corners
  • State Route 68: From U.S. 93 to Bullhead City
  • State Route 80: From Bisbee to Douglas

These additions aim to bolster the existing network, ensuring that all major travel corridors in the state are equipped to support electric vehicles.

Federal Funding and Private Partnership

The expansion of Arizona’s EV infrastructure is primarily funded by $76.5 million in federal funds from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, which aims to promote the adoption of electric vehicles nationwide. The plan’s execution will be overseen by ADOT, which will handle the contracting process with private companies responsible for operating the stations. These stations will be built with an 80% federal funding and a 20% private match, with no state funding required.

Benefits of Electric Vehicles

Tucson Electric Power has highlighted several benefits of driving electric vehicles, including:

  • Reduced Maintenance: EVs typically require fewer trips to the mechanic compared to internal combustion engine vehicles.
  • Noise Reduction: Electric vehicles are much quieter, reducing noise pollution in busy Arizona cities.
  • Environmental Impact: EVs do not produce CO2 or other pollutants, contributing to cleaner air and a healthier environment.

Future Developments

Planning and construction using NEVI funds are expected to begin in 2025, with a buildout that will span several years. ADOT has already started seeking bids for private entities to build or upgrade the first phase of EV charging stations along interstate highways, with contract awards expected by late summer.

This initiative is a significant step towards a greener future for Arizona, ensuring that the state remains at the forefront of sustainable transportation. By participating in the planning process, residents can help shape a robust and efficient EV charging network that meets the needs of all Arizonans.
