PHOENIX — The Grand Canyon Railway, renowned for its scenic route from Williams to the Grand Canyon’s South Rim, is taking a major step toward sustainability with a recent $3.4 million federal grant to convert one of its diesel locomotives to battery power. This transformation, funded by the Department of Transportation, will enable the locomotive to run entirely on battery, reducing emissions and enhancing the journey’s environmental impact.
Xanterra, which operates the Grand Canyon Railway, will cover 20% of the conversion costs. Eric Hadder, the railway’s chief mechanical officer, called the project a “unique chance to bring modern efficiency to a historic rail icon.”
Battery-Powered Journey Set for 2027 Debut
The railway anticipates the battery-powered locomotive to be operational by 2027, capable of traveling the entire 65-mile route on a single charge, aided by a regenerative braking system that recharges the battery by up to 30% per trip. While passengers won’t notice major changes in the experience, the quieter, cleaner locomotive will offer a more eco-friendly journey.
“The Grand Canyon Railway will soon be a place to experience both steam locomotion history and modern battery-electric innovation,” Kevin Crosby, Xanterra’s sustainability director, said. The project adds to the railway’s green initiatives, including previous conversions of steam engines to run on waste vegetable oil.
Arizona’s Broader Rail Funding Boost
The Grand Canyon Railway grant is part of a larger $2.4 billion investment through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, with Arizona receiving a total of $60.2 million for rail projects. Other funded projects in the state include:
- $21.6 million for Arizona Eastern Railway Company to rehabilitate 34 miles of track.
- $5 million for accessibility improvements at the Flagstaff Amtrak station.
- $30.2 million for enhancements to the Amtrak Southwest Chief line in northwestern Arizona.
The Grand Canyon Railway, operating since 1901, is open year-round except on Christmas Day and hosts special Polar Express rides during the holiday season.
