Grand Canyon National Park Proposes Increase in Backcountry Permit Fees, Seeks Public Input

Fee Adjustments Aim to Support Backcountry Operations and Enhance Visitor Experience

Grand Canyon, AZ – Grand Canyon National Park is inviting the public to comment on a proposed increase in backcountry permit fees, set to take effect on May 1, 2025. Under the proposal, while the $10 per application fee will remain unchanged, the nightly fees for backcountry camping will increase. Below-rim fees will rise from $15 to $24 per person per night, and above-rim fees will increase from $4 to $6 per person per night.

The National Park Service (NPS) is seeking feedback on this proposal to ensure that visitors’ perspectives are considered. Interested individuals can submit their comments online through October 12, 2024, by visiting the official comment site at: parkplanning.nps.gov/GRCA_Backcountry_Fee_Increase.

The last fee adjustment occurred in April 2024, and the proposed increase is designed to cover the operational costs of the Backcountry Information Center and fund projects that enhance the visitor experience in the park. These funds will support a range of activities related to backcountry camping and preservation efforts within the park.
