Grand Canyon Announces 2025 Reopening Timeline for Trails and Campground

Bright Angel Trail to reopen May 15; River Trail and Silver Bridge closures extended until October

GRAND CANYON, Ariz. — Visitors to Grand Canyon National Park will once again be able to access the Bright Angel Trail and Campground starting May 15, the National Park Service announced this week. The reopening marks a major milestone in the ongoing Transcanyon Waterline construction project, which has required extended closures throughout the inner canyon since fall 2024.

While this is welcome news for hikers and backpackers, other popular areas will remain closed longer than expected. The River Trail, Silver Bridge, and the Plateau Point Trail—originally set to reopen in May—will now stay off-limits until October 1, 2025, to allow for additional construction work.

“This is one of the most ambitious infrastructure upgrades in park history,” said a spokesperson for the Grand Canyon Public Affairs Office. “We’re working hard to ensure both safety and long-term improvements to trail access, water supply, and electrical infrastructure.”

The Phantom Ranch Canteen and Lodge successfully reopened on April 1. However, large group campsites at Bright Angel Campground will remain closed until October, though small group sites are still available.

Construction crews will be reinforcing Silver Bridge, installing new water and electrical lines, and replacing key segments of pipe and conduit between Plateau Point, River Trail, and Bright Angel Campground during the extended closure.

Hikers attempting rim-to-rim routes can still travel via the South and North Kaibab Trails, but officials are urging caution due to high temperatures and limited water availability.

“Plan your hike wisely,” park officials said. “Avoid the hottest parts of the day, bring extra water and salty snacks, and rest often in the shade.”

Until the end of September, hikers will need to use Black Bridge to cross the Colorado River. Access to Phantom Ranchvia the River Trail will not be possible during this time. Commercial river trip exchanges will occur at Pipe Creek Beach, while private trip exchanges will use Boat Beach until May 14, after which both beaches will be open to all.

Meanwhile, upgrades continue at the Bright Angel Campground, Havasupai Gardens, and water treatment facilities on the South Rim and at Phantom Ranch. Improvements include new fire hydrants, power and communication lines, and water filling stations.

Construction is expected to continue into spring 2026, and visitors are encouraged to check the Grand Canyon National Park website for real-time updates on trail closures and reopening dates.
