Governor Katie Hobbs Appoints Jerry McPherson as Executive Director of the Commission of African American Affairs

Longtime Phoenix Leader to Drive Initiatives Supporting Economic Growth, Equality, and Justice for African American Communities in Arizona

PHOENIX – Governor Katie Hobbs announced on Tuesday that Jerry McPherson, a prominent Phoenix community leader, has been appointed as the new Executive Director of the Commission of African American Affairs. McPherson brings a wealth of experience in both public service and private sector leadership to the role, where he will guide efforts to support the economic advancement, justice, and educational opportunities for African Americans across Arizona.

“I am thrilled to have Jerry McPherson as The Commission’s new Executive Director,” Governor Hobbs said. “His leadership and innovative approaches to empowering his community are exactly what we need to continue making progress. I look forward to seeing how Jerry’s expertise will shape a bright future for The Commission and the African American community throughout Arizona.”

In his new position, McPherson will lead the Commission in its mission to unite African American leaders, promote equality, and address critical issues such as economic development, justice, health, and education. McPherson emphasized the urgency of the Commission’s work, stating, “Our mission—to unite African American leaders and communities in the pursuit of opportunity and equity—has never been more urgent. I look forward to collaborating with our elected and appointed officials to transform our aspirations into lasting change.”


McPherson is a U.S. Army veteran and graduate of the Flinn-Brown Fellowship, with a career dedicated to advancing community and economic development initiatives. He has held advisory roles with the cities of Phoenix and Tempe and has led key organizations, including the Greater Phoenix Urban League and Valley of the Sun United Way. Before his appointment as Executive Director, McPherson served as a Commissioner for the Commission of African American Affairs and was the Managing Director at Per Scholas Phoenix, a nonprofit focused on workforce development.

Governor Hobbs praised McPherson’s dedication and experience, expressing confidence in his ability to lead the Commission’s efforts to foster meaningful progress and lasting change for African American communities across the state.
