Governor Katie Hobbs and Governor Joe Lombardo Oppose California Bill Threatening Arizona and Nevada Fuel Supply

Joint Letter Urges Governor Newsom to Reconsider SB 950, Citing Potential Gas Price Hikes and Economic Disruption

PHOENIX, AZ – In a bipartisan effort to address rising fuel costs and maintain regional economic stability, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs and Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo have co-authored a letter to California Governor Gavin Newsom, urging a reevaluation of SB 950. The bill, currently under review during California’s special legislative session, poses a threat to the fuel supply for Arizona and Nevada, which could result in significant gas price increases for consumers.

“Arizonans are already burdened by the high cost of living. We cannot afford another price hike at the pump,” said Governor Hobbs. “I urge Governor Newsom and the California legislature to reconsider this legislation, which could reduce Arizona’s gasoline supply, increase fuel prices, and hinder our economic growth. I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with Governor Lombardo on this critical issue, and together, we hope to find regional solutions that lower fuel costs.”

Governor Lombardo echoed these concerns, stating, “The people of Nevada and Arizona should not bear the consequences of California’s policies, particularly when it comes to higher gas prices. Reducing fuel costs is a bipartisan issue, and I’m thankful to partner with Governor Hobbs in opposing policies that will raise prices and cause economic disruption. I urge California’s leadership to reconsider SB 950 and include Arizona and Nevada in future policy discussions.”

The letter highlights a California Energy Commission (CEC) report, warning that SB 950 could “artificially create shortages in downstream markets,” potentially inflating gas prices in Arizona and Nevada. Refiners have also expressed concerns about inventory mandates that could lead to supply shortages or even refinery shutdowns, emphasizing the need for swift reconsideration of the bill.

Both governors stressed the importance of regional collaboration to ensure affordable fuel and economic stability for their states’ constituents.
