Gov. Hobbs Orders Flags to Half-Staff for Fallen Timber Mesa Firefighters

Arizona honors Brenna Kulikowski and Damon Thompson, killed in a line-of-duty crash earlier this month.

Governor Katie Hobbs has ordered flags at all state buildings to be lowered to half-staff this weekend in honor of two Timber Mesa Fire District firefighters who died in a vehicle collision while on duty.

Flags will be lowered on Friday, Sept. 26, for Brenna Kulikowski, and again on Saturday, Sept. 27, for Damon Thompson. Both memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. at the Show Low High School Auditorium.

“These two heroes are missed but will never be forgotten,” Hobbs said in a statement. “They both embodied public service as firefighters who served the White Mountains region and the entire state selflessly. I send my deepest condolences to Brenna’s husband and daughter, to Damon’s fiancée and to both of their parents, siblings, extended families, communities and colleagues.”

The firefighters were killed on Sept. 14 when an ambulance they were riding in was struck head-on on State Route 260near Heber. A third person, the driver of the other vehicle, also died in the crash.

Kulikowski, 31, leaves behind a husband and young daughter. Thompson, 21, was just shy of completing his first year with the fire district and is survived by his fiancée and family.

State officials encouraged individuals, businesses, and community organizations to join in lowering their flags in remembrance of the two fallen firefighters.
