GOODYEAR — A high school student in Goodyear was taken into custody this week after posting a photo of a firearm on social media, according to local police. The incident prompted a swift response from both school officials and law enforcement.
Staff at Estrella Foothills High School notified police around 3:40 p.m. Wednesday after discovering the post. Officers quickly launched an investigation to determine whether there was an immediate threat to students or staff.
By Wednesday evening, investigators identified the students connected to the post and went to their residence. One student was arrested, booked into Durango Juvenile Detention, and is facing charges for possession of a firearm. Authorities said a second student is also expected to face charges, though they were not taken into custody at the time.
Police stressed that the investigation remains ongoing but emphasized that no direct threat to the school was found. As a precaution, Estrella Foothills High School will have increased police patrols in the coming days to reassure students, families, and staff.
Officials have not released the identities of the students due to their age, and no additional details about the firearm or the circumstances surrounding the social media post have been made public.
The case highlights growing concerns among Valley schools about the role of social media in campus safety threats, with police urging parents to monitor online activity and encourage students to report suspicious behavior.
