Glendale Promotes 28-Year Veteran Colby Brandt to Chief of Police

Homegrown leader brings decades of experience and community connection to top role

GLENDALE, Ariz. — After 28 years of service with the Glendale Police Department, Colby Brandt has officially been named the city’s new chief of police.

Brandt, who previously served as assistant chief and recently spent four months as interim chief, was promoted on Monday by City Manager Kevin Phelps. Phelps said the selection honors the department’s tradition of developing leaders from within who are closely tied to the community.

“Colby Brandt embodies this tradition of homegrown leadership,” Phelps said, noting Brandt’s experience across all divisions of the department.

Brandt takes over for former Chief Chris Briggs, who retired in January after 32 years of service.

Born and raised in Glendale, Brandt expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the city in this new capacity. He outlined several goals for his tenure, including:

  • Improving traffic safety through enhanced speed enforcement.

  • Supporting officer development and wellness.

  • Strengthening Glendale’s reputation as a safe and welcoming city.

  • Building strong partnerships with regional public safety agencies.

Brandt, a second-generation law enforcement officer, credited his mentors, family, and community for helping him prepare for this leadership role.

“I’m honored to lead the exceptional men and women of the Glendale Police Department and serve the community where I was born and raised,” he said.
