Gila River Police Seek Help After Middle School Gym Destroyed in Fire

Officials confirm blaze was human-caused; second building also damaged

PHOENIX — Authorities with the Gila River Indian Community are asking for the public’s help after a fire destroyed a gym at Skyline Middle School early Tuesday morning.

The school, located on the Gila River Indian Reservation near Preschool and Casa Blanca roads, suffered extensive damage when Tribal officers arrived at the scene around 1:44 a.m. and found the gym fully engulfed in flames. While firefighters worked to extinguish the fire, a nearby building also caught fire but was saved from complete destruction.

An investigation by tribal fire officials and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives determined that the fire was intentionally set.
