Gila Bend residents will get their library back. After nearly a year without local library services, Maricopa County and the Town of Gila Bend have reached an agreement to reopen and operate the community’s longtime library — a facility that served tens of thousands of visitors annually before its abrupt closure last spring.
The Gila Bend Library shut its doors on May 22, 2025, after the Gila Bend Unified School District ended its partnership with the Maricopa County Library District. The library had been housed in a school district-owned building since 2021, and when that arrangement ended, so did access to library services for the entire town.
Under the new intergovernmental agreement approved Wednesday by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, the county library district will take over staffing, materials and technology, while the Town of Gila Bend will be responsible for maintaining the physical building. The library will return to its original home — a 2,665-square-foot space connected to the town’s community center at 202 N. Euclid Street, where it had operated for more than three decades before moving to the school facility.
Before it reopens, the space will receive modest but meaningful updates including new carpet, fresh paint and upgraded lighting. Renovations and the move are expected to take roughly six months, with a projected reopening in fall 2026. The agreement runs for an initial five-year term.
The closure left a noticeable gap in a community where the library had become a hub for far more than book lending. In its final year of operation, it recorded more than 53,000 visits, hosted hundreds of programs and provided job search and workforce resources to local residents — services that carry particular weight in a small, rural town with limited alternatives.
District 5 Supervisor Steve Gallardo, who represents Gila Bend, called the reopening a major milestone, pointing to the library’s role in everything from early childhood literacy to internet access and summer meal programs for children.
