GCU Granted Division I Active Membership by NCAA

On Wednesday, the NCAA announced that Grand Canyon University has been granted active membership in Division I and will begin Division I play in the 2017-18 season.

The Antelopes have been in a four-year probation period waiting for the official NCAA Division I declaration for the school sports teams.

Dan Majerle, the former Suns’ All-Star, was hired as the men’s basketball head coach four years ago to start the process of transitioning from Division II to I.

This change is good news as now the Antelopes are eligible for the Western Athletic Conference tournament and the NCAA Tournament, along with the NIT. GCU did play a Division I schedule in the Western Athletic Conference last season, but was not eligible for the NCAA Tournament.

The Antelopes are anticipated to be competitive in the WAC after Majerle, in a solid recruiting class.
