PHOENIX – Former Arizona Senator Jeff Flake has officially endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, the Harris-Walz campaign announced Sunday, just weeks before the November 5th general election.
Flake, a lifelong Republican who served 18 years in Congress, threw his support behind Harris after her recent visit to the U.S.-Mexico border in Douglas, Arizona. Despite his conservative roots, Flake emphasized that his endorsement stems from his commitment to the “rule of law,” rather than party loyalty.
“Most Republicans, like me, believe strongly in the rule of law, and that is a threshold issue,” Flake said in his statement.
Flake’s backing of Harris marks the second consecutive election cycle in which he has crossed party lines. In 2020, he endorsed President Joe Biden and chose a third-party candidate over Donald Trump in 2016.
Flake, who served alongside Harris on the Senate Judiciary Committee, cited her understanding of border security and immigration reform as central to his decision.
“She was a prosecutor, attorney general of California. She’s familiar with what goes on at the border and what’s needed,” Flake explained, adding that he trusts Harris to work toward bipartisan immigration solutions.
Flake joins a growing group of Arizona Republicans supporting Harris, with the campaign reporting 90 GOP endorsements as of September 24. Polls show the race tightening, with recent numbers giving Harris and Trump a slight edge over each other depending on the source.
