Family of Car Crash Victims File Lawsuit Against Mellow Mushroom

The family of two sisters who died in a tragic wrong-way crash last year is filing a lawsuit against the Mellow Mushroom on Happy Valley Road, where the driver who killed them was being served prior to the incident.

Officials said that the driver, Keaton Allison, 21, who was also killed in the crash, had a blood-alcohol level of .25, on the night of April 14th, which is three times above the legal limit and considered a “super extreme” case.

Karli Richardson, 20, was a graduating senior at Grand Canyon University and Kelsey Richardson, 18, was a junior at Western Carolina University. Allison also attended Grand Canyon University, though it does not appear that Karli and he knew each other.

It has been reported that Allison was driving 15 miles over the speed limit, without headlights, and had traveled almost six miles in the wrong direction before he crashed into the Richardson’s.

Arizona’s Department of Liquor Licenses and Control found multiple violations by the Mellow Mushroom, near Interstate 17. These include “selling liquor to an intoxicated or disorderly person” and “failure to protect the safety of patrons.”

Last summer, Cathy Hocking, the mother of the two sisters, said, “I think there’s responsibility to be taken and I’m certainly not walking away from this.” The owners of the Mellow Mushroom have declined to comment at this time.
