Falcon Field Airport Launches New Airfield Driver Training Program to Enhance Safety

Initiative aims to prevent runway incursions, align with FAA standards, and strengthen community relations

MESA, Ariz. — Falcon Field Airport has launched a new Airfield Driver Training Program to improve airfield vehicle safety and minimize runway and taxiway incursions. The initiative is designed to educate airport tenants, city employees, and other authorized personnel on the critical protocols required for safely navigating the Air Operations Area (AOA).

“This program represents our dedication to continuous improvement and our responsibility to the community we serve. It underscores our commitment to foster a safe and secure environment for all airport users,” said Corinne Nystrom, Airport Director. “We’re voluntarily aligning with the Federal Aviation Administration’s FAR Part 139 safety standards and taking proactive steps to ensure that everyone operating on the airfield is equipped with the knowledge necessary to maintain the highest safety standards.”

Training Program Features Safety and Noise Reduction Initiatives

A key component of the program is a five-minute training video that not only promotes airfield safety but also supports the airport’s Fly Friendly voluntary noise abatement initiative. By educating drivers on best practices, the program seeks to enhance safety measures while addressing community concerns about aircraft noise.

To maintain secure access to the AOA, all individuals with city-issued gate access credentials must complete an internet-based training course. Access cards will only be issued to those who have a legitimate need to enter the AOA, as determined by the city.

“By proactively addressing potential risks like runway incursions, this program helps ensure that everyone accessing the airfield is well-prepared to operate safely and efficiently,” said Mark Gibbs, Airport Projects and Operations Manager. “It’s a vital step in preserving Falcon Field Airport’s reputation for excellence and safety while reinforcing our dedication to the operational integrity of the airfield.”

Mandatory Annual Training for Access Holders

The program will officially launch this month, beginning with airport employees as the first to complete training. Moving forward, all current and future access badge holders must renew their training annually to retain AOA access privileges.

Officials expect approximately 2,000 individuals, including tenants, contractors, and sub-tenants, to participate in the program.
