Extreme Heat Alert: Stay Safe as Phoenix Closes Major Trails

NWS Warns of Dangerous Conditions; Camelback Mountain and Piestewa Peak Trails Closed Today

With temperatures set to soar, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for Phoenix. To ensure public safety, Camelback Mountain and Piestewa Peak Trails will be closed from 9 AM to 5 PM starting today. During these hours, it’s advisable to avoid all trails in Phoenix to prevent heat-related illnesses.

Phoenix is home to over 41,000 acres of beautiful desert parks and mountain preserves, featuring more than 200 miles of trails. These trails attract millions of visitors each year, offering breathtaking views and challenging hikes. However, the extreme heat poses significant risks, making safety the top priority during this warning period. Hiking in the desert can be enjoyable, but it’s crucial to take precautions, especially when temperatures climb into the triple digits. Here are some essential safety tips:

  1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your hike. Always carry enough water for the entire duration of your trip, and consider bringing electrolyte-replenishing drinks.
  2. Plan Your Hike Wisely: Start early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler. Avoid hiking during the peak heat hours of the day.
  3. Dress Appropriately: Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing to help keep cool. Don’t forget a hat and sunglasses for additional sun protection.
  4. Know Your Limits: Be aware of signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, such as dizziness, nausea, and confusion. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek shade and hydrate immediately.
  5. Hike with a Buddy: Always hike with a partner and let someone know your plans. In case of an emergency, having a companion can be lifesaving.
