PHOENIX — Arizona state Sen. Jake Hoffman filed an ethics complaint this week against fellow lawmaker Sen. Analise Ortiz, urging her expulsion after she posted information about immigration enforcement activity in Phoenix.
Hoffman, a Republican, accused Ortiz of endangering federal officers and undermining public safety.
“By publicly posting alerts about federal law enforcement activity, she actively tipped off individuals being pursued by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), jeopardizing the safety of officers and law-abiding citizens,” Hoffman said in a statement.
Ortiz defends sharing ICE activity
The District 24 Democrat shared the post on Instagram in early August, drawing widespread criticism from Republicans after it was amplified by a right-wing social media account. Ortiz has defended her actions, saying the information was already public and protected under the First Amendment.
She compared her post to apps that alert drivers about police on highways. In a statement, Ortiz said Republicans are trying to intimidate her and silence discussion about immigration enforcement.
“They want police operations to happen in secret. They want Arizonans terrified to talk about what we are witnessing happening to our friends, family, and neighbors,” she said. “The future of our democracy depends on bravery. I choose to remain brave.”
Next steps for ethics complaint
Hoffman called Ortiz’s actions “reckless” and argued she should lose her seat. If expulsion fails, he wants her stripped of committee assignments, staff support, and access to Senate facilities.
Sen. Shawnna Bolick, who chairs the Senate Ethics Committee, said the complaint will be reviewed once committee rules are established. She also forwarded Hoffman’s allegations to federal prosecutors for further review.
The Legislature is not scheduled to reconvene until January, leaving the timeline for action uncertain.
