Echo Canyon Trail at Camelback Mountain will remain closed while Phoenix completes a major safety project to address unstable boulders discovered after recent storms.
The trail was shut down in mid-October so experts could assess erosion concerns. City officials say that after consulting with geotechnical and civil engineers, they finalized a plan to stabilize and remove three loose boulders posing a risk to hikers.
Work beginning the week of Nov. 17 includes drilling into each boulder and injecting expanding grout, which will allow the rocks to safely break apart. The area will then be restored to its natural appearance. The city says the approach is designed to be efficient, minimally disruptive and focused squarely on public safety.
While the trail is closed, crews are also making additional improvements at the trailhead, including restroom upgrades and parking lot maintenance — work that would have required separate closures if done later.
Phoenix officials are encouraging hikers to explore other popular trails during the closure, including Cholla Trail, Piestewa Peak, North Mountain, Lookout Mountain, Dreamy Draw and South Mountain Park and Preserve. More details are available on the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation website.
