One of Phoenix’s most iconic hiking spots is off-limits for now. The Echo Canyon Trail on Camelback Mountain has been closed indefinitely after heavy storms earlier this week caused significant erosion and safety hazards, city officials announced Thursday.
According to the Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department, the closure is a precautionary measure while crews assess the full extent of the storm damage and determine what repairs will be needed before reopening the trail.
“The recent storms have caused erosion along the trail that presents safety concerns,” said Cynthia Aguilar, director of the Parks and Recreation Department. “We know Echo Canyon is one of our most popular hiking destinations, and we appreciate the community’s patience as our team works to ensure it’s safe again.”
Echo Canyon, known for its steep ascent and panoramic Valley views, attracts hundreds of hikers daily, particularly during the cooler months. Its closure follows a string of weather-related impacts across the Phoenix area, including temporary damage at the Phoenix Zoo, which plans to reopen Friday after several days of cleanup.
Until Echo Canyon reopens, city officials are encouraging outdoor enthusiasts to explore alternative hiking destinations such as Piestewa Peak, North Mountain, Dreamy Draw, and South Mountain Park and Preserve.
Updates on the trail’s status will be posted on the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation website once safety inspections are complete.
