PHOENIX — Durant’s, the legendary steakhouse in central Phoenix, has temporarily closed after being sold to the team behind Dominick’s Steakhouse, Steak 44, and Ocean 44.
The new owners—brothers Mike and Jeffrey Mastro, their father Dennis Mastro, and business partner Scott Troilo—plan to renovate the space while preserving its classic ambiance. The Mastros, 2020 James Beard Award semifinalists, aim to enhance the restaurant’s menu and kitchen while ensuring it remains true to its roots.
A New Chapter for a Phoenix Landmark
“My family and I are thrilled with the acquisition and intend to bring a renaissance to this iconic steakhouse and expand its legendary status for generations to come,” said Mike Mastro in a press release.
The dining room’s vintage aesthetic will remain intact, but kitchen upgrades and menu refinements are on the way. No official reopening date has been announced.
“It’s a privilege and honor to acquire the restaurant and to preserve its history while enhancing its future,” said Jeffrey Mastro.
A 75-Year Legacy
Durant’s was founded in 1950 by Jack Durant and Jack R. McElroy and remained a family-run business for decades. The second-generation owners, Jack M. McElroy and Carol McElroy, decided it was time to pass the torch.
“It has been the honor and pleasure of a lifetime to serve the finest steaks, perfect martinis, and heavenly desserts to our extended Durant’s Arizona ‘family’ for the past 75 years,” the McElroys said in a statement.
Phoenix diners eagerly await Durant’s return, as the legendary steakhouse prepares to enter its next era under new ownership.
