Republican Donald Trump is projected to defeat Kamala Harris and return to the White House as the 47th president of the United States, marking an unprecedented political comeback. Trump, projected as the winner late Tuesday night by Fox News and Decision Desk, will serve his second term after holding office from 2016 to 2020.
At 78, Trump will be the oldest president ever elected and the first since Grover Cleveland in 1892 to win the presidency after a prior defeat. He is also the first individual convicted of a felony to assume the Oval Office.
Trump’s victory stems from his campaign’s success in appealing to Black and Latino voters, particularly through direct engagement on male-centric podcasts and discussions on immigration and inflation. His focus on these issues appeared to resonate, with initial survey data indicating he gained some support within these communities compared to his 2020 bid. In contrast, Harris’ supporters were reportedly motivated by concerns over the future of democracy, as her campaign framed Trump as a significant threat to democratic values.
Harris, who would have broken several historical barriers as the first woman and person of South Asian descent to lead the country, ultimately did not secure the necessary support to claim the presidency.
