Delivery Driver Fires at Bat-Wielding Attacker During Morning Confrontation in Peoria

Police say no one was struck when a delivery worker opened fire in self-defense after being attacked in a quiet West Valley neighborhood.

A routine delivery turned violent Thursday morning in Peoria when a driver reportedly shot at an assailant who attacked him with a baseball bat in a residential area of the Vistancia community.

According to the Peoria Police Department, the incident unfolded shortly before 7 a.m. near White Peak Drive and 137th Avenue. Investigators said 40-year-old Osley Puente-Marquez, of Phoenix, got out of his vehicle and began swinging a bat at the delivery driver during a confrontation.

Police said the driver first tried to defend himself using pepper spray, but when that failed to stop the attack, he drew a firearm and fired a single shot. No one was hit by the bullet, and the suspect fled before officers arrived.

After reviewing neighborhood surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses, detectives located and arrested Puente-Marquez. He was booked into jail on charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, disorderly conduct, and forgery.

Authorities have not said what led to the confrontation or whether the men knew each other. The Peoria Police Department said the case remains under investigation.
