Deadly Bee Attack at Scottsdale Senior Facility Leaves One Dead, Two Hospitalized

Roofing crew swarmed while working at Vi at Silverstone; investigation underway

SCOTTSDALE — A tragic incident unfolded Monday morning when a swarm of bees attacked a group of workers at a senior living facility in north Scottsdale, leaving one person dead and two others hospitalized, according to local authorities.

The attack happened around 9:30 a.m. at the Vi at Silverstone community near Scottsdale and Pinnacle Peak roads. Police said the victims were part of a crew performing maintenance on the building’s roof when they were suddenly swarmed by bees.

All three workers were transported to a hospital for treatment. One of the individuals succumbed to their injuries, while the remaining two were listed in stable condition as of late Monday morning.

The Scottsdale Police Department is investigating the incident, but officials have not yet released the names of the victims or the cause of the bee swarm. It remains unclear whether a hive was disturbed during the work or if the bees were already agitated.

The facility, which serves as a luxury retirement community, was not reported to have had any residents affected during the incident. Emergency responders acted swiftly to secure the area.

Deadly bee attacks, while rare, have occurred in Arizona in the past, especially during the warmer months when bee activity increases. Experts caution those working outdoors to remain alert for signs of nearby hives and to exercise caution when disturbing building structures.

As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to review safety protocols and whether pest control measures were in place or needed at the site.
