Cochise County Traffic Stop Leads to Arrest on Human Smuggling Charges

Sheriff’s Deputies and Border Patrol Uncover Human Smuggling Operation in Routine Traffic Stop Near Bisbee

A routine traffic stop conducted by Cochise County Sheriff’s deputies on August 8, 2024, led to the arrest of a Phoenix man on charges of human smuggling. This incident highlights the ongoing concerns about illegal immigration and human trafficking routes through Arizona.

Deputies stopped a 2018 Toyota Camry on Highway 92 and South Rio Vista west of Bisbee at approximately 3:10 PM on Thursday. The investigation escalated when it was discovered that the driver, 37-year-old Dane Russell Canterbury of Phoenix, was transporting two undocumented immigrants in his vehicle.

Following the discovery, United States Border Patrol agents were summoned to the scene and took custody of the individuals for processing. Meanwhile, Canterbury was arrested and charged with felony human smuggling. He was subsequently booked into the Cochise County Sheriff’s Jail, where he is being held without bond.


The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office has indicated that the investigation is ongoing, with further details to be released as they become available.
